Book Swap Night

Book Swap Night!
(A Not-so-Oprah Book Club…)

If you’re in need of some new books for reading and some scintillating literary discussion… or just an excuse to get out of the house …. I’m hosting a monthly evening for anyone interested in getting together to swap and share in some good reading – there’ll even be cake!
How it works:
You simply bring along a book or two you don’t mind sharing with other people. I will keep a record of which books belong to which person and who has borrowed them. When we all get together, you can give a brief synopsis of the book/s – or simply add them to the pile! Anyone interested can borrow the book until the following meeting. You then return with the book (if finished!) at the next meeting, choose a new one and so it goes.

It’s a great chance to broaden your reading options, get together or just indulge a Tuesday night outing.

If you’re interested in coming along, Book Swap Night will be….

Tuesday May 3rd

Please just phone, text or email me for my address
and to let me know you’re coming:

If you would like to go to this months dinner you can email

It is on Wednesday 4th of June and it is in Pucol this month. Noor needs to confirm the numbers by Monday 2nd of June and is 30 euros per person. Noor can email you all of the details and a map on how to get to the restaurant.

You can also get added to their distribution list so you will be kept in the loop as each dinner is organised.

Japanese Cooking Class - Next one 16th June

Back on the 12th of May, 10 of us that started off in the Pasta cooking class, learnt how to cook the Japanese way!

The fantastic teachers, Danelle Sofuku and Takako Christensen showed us how to make Sushi, and other yummy food using all the best ingredients. We all learnt the secret in making the perfect sushi roll and got to roll our own.

Here are some photos that I took that day.

Danelle and Takako are more than happy to do a repeat class for anyone that missed out. I totally recommend it! The class will be held on Monday 16th of June. I will give you more details when you RSVP. If you are able to let me know ASAP as there is a class limit of 10.

Organised Lunches and Dinners

Hi everyone

Just wanted you to know, AT THIS STAGE, that I will be no longer organising Lunches or Dinners. I will be concentrating on organising Cooking classes (will advise you on this later) and still more than happy to take Power Walking classes. The Coffee catch ups on Wednesday's happen without any effort and are normally well attended.

Monica is happy to take over the Friday lunches when she returns from summer holiday's and there will be organised Dinner's once a month that 3 ladies (from the suburbs) organise. These dinners are normally around Valenica.

It has been fun organising the dinners and lunches over the last 3 years and thanks to all of you who came to them. They have been so much fun and it has been a great way to meet everyone.

If anyone wishes to organise a dinner etc, I am more than happy to post this on the cronica.

Cheers
Bridget

A book about Depression

I found out in 2006 that two of my close family members were suffering from Depression, and they still are, but getting better.
At first I just listened as they explained how it all happened and when they got diagnosed, what it is like to be depressed, how they feel on good days and the many bad days etc etc. As positvie as I tried to be that they were going to be OK, it isn't as easy as what I thought.
As well as the person who has the depression, it is a hard thing for anyone to deal with, as I have found living so far away to be of any support.
Recently, I was on an aeroplane, and looked through a magazine and read the book review page. There was a book mentioned called 'Shoot the Damn Dog' by Sally Brampton. She is a depressive and this book is a memoir of her life of depression. I bought this book through Amazon UK, hoping it may help me understand the illness better and how I can support my family members better.
So far I am a third of the way through the book and it has already opened my mind (more) on how terrible this illness is. Finally on page 99 she tells you ways for people to help loved ones with depression.
I thought I would share this with you all as I am sure I am not the only one that is dealing with this. Sally said that years ago when she was well, she read that 1 in 10 would suffer from some form of mental illness. Now it is 1 in 4 and at any one time, 25 percent of us will suffer from 'mental distress'.
On the inside cover of this book it says - 'There are no promises, only suggestions... With its raw, understated eloquence, this book will speak to anyone whose life has been haunted by depression, and offers help and understanding to those with loved ones who suffer from this debilitating condition.

Hi everyone

If you are keen to join in for a Childless Lunch this Friday, let me know.
I will have the details in the next day or two so when you RSVP, I will let you know.
This week it might be French as as usual, I will try to keep it around 10 - 15 euros.

Also, Coffee at Starbucks Gran Via, every Wednesday - 12.30 - 2.30

And remember the Power Walks on Tuesdays at 3pm.  Great way to keep fit and have a good yabba along the way.  We are covering 5km within the hour.

Also, the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month is a power walk also but if you want more of a workout, some of us will be running some of the way adding a couple of km's onto it.  Be sure to join either way.  Just another way to keep motivated and fit.

We had the first Girls Night Out last week and 7 of us had a great time.  I will have more info on the dinners at a later date.

Enjoy the rest of the your week!
