Learning how to make fresh pasta!

On Monday, 9 of us had the opportunity to learn how to make fresh pasta. Sheree (ex Luna Rossa) who owns Hosteria El Vizio, held a cooking class for us.

We learnt how to make two different types of Pasta, then we got to eat it with their delicious sauces.

Marco, the professional chef from Italy, took us through the ropes and turns us into pro's (we like to think we were anyway).

We all totally recommend Sheree's restaurant for lunch or dinner, or even for coffee. The food is so yummy, all freshly made pasta. Almost all the ingredients come from Italy.

C/ Eugenia Vines, 105 It is opposite the Las Arena Hotel main entrance (big flash one on Malvarossa Beach).

Keep an eye out for future classes! Only on the Valencia Cronica...

BIOPARC

I thought I would share with you some of the photos I took in the weekend at the new Bioparc that opened a couple of months ago. It is AWESOME. I have been to a few zoo's around the world and this would be in my top picks. I think it would be better than Auckland Zoo!

There is a part called the Madagascar and you can watch the lemurs run around you. You are not allowed to touch them but you can get really close as you can see...

There are heaps of Baby Lemurs and they are about 1 month old? They run around from adult to adult and they aren't scared of coming up to the people. This one below played for ages on the fence right next too a big group of us. The kids loved it. There is a queue to get into this part but so worth the wait.

This guy decided to have a sunbath which was really funny. It had been play fighting with another one then plonked himself down for a rest. These ones came right up to us also.

The one up the tree was jumping from tree to tree showing off. Our first time in this part, they were all asleep but around 5pm they were running around all over the place.

I took over 300 photos. The animals were so happy and you could get so close it was amazing. I just kept clicking away!

It costs 20 euros for Adult, 15 euros for Infant over 4 or 5? and 16.50 for senior. You can buy a year pass for double (eg 40 for adult). I can guarantee you that you will want to go back. They haven't finished yet - maybe a third left to finish. We spent almost 4 hours there and could have done another lap.

They open 10am - 6pm. It was really busy on Sunday so make sure you allow time for queueing. If you do decided to get a year pass, the queue for that was very long and could only imagine it would take ages to get through the line.

They have a restaurant that is Buffet style. It is 12.50 for Adults and 8.50 for children. I didn't get to see the food options as again the queue was very long so we went to the other little kiosk and got a boccadilla instead. I think it said at the entrance that you could NOT bring food into the parc?

Because this zoo is more about seeing the animals, less about fences. The little ones walking think they can climb over the low fence (2 year old can do it easy). We did manage to stop Jack from doing it, but they can't help themselves - can't blame them when cool animals are on the other side. Just be prepared! Obviously the lions etc are well fenced!

Enjoy! I am sure you will love it like we did!

Day Trip to Denia

Next time you have a day free and want to go on an easy day trip, pack a picnic and head to Denia. It is only 1 hour away and there is a nice beach south of the yacht club with shallow water great for the children to play in. There is also an Indian Restaurant there called Indian Palace. By far, it is the best Indian food we have had for a long time. Open everyday except Tuesday lunch time. They even open at 12.00pm and 6.30pm! Passeig Saladar No. 130 (on the beach road). The picture above is of Jack at the Denia beach. Hard to believe he turns 2 next week!

Information about Schools in L'Eliana

We are settled in L'Eliana, a small city 20 min drive from Valencia city-centre. (CV-35, way to Ademuz, exit L'Eliana)
My two kids are going to two Spanish Colegio

Colegio HADA (from 0 to 6 years old)
A private school. Bilingual Spanish (Castellano) and English.
There are 2 centres : in L'Eliana and in San Antonio de Ben ageber (near L'Eliana)
The 2 schools are new.
The teachers are great professionals, young, enthusiastic.
I am driving my kids there every day since 2005 and I am always welcomed with a smile!

Average of 25 kids/class (with a main teacher and an assistant)
From 3 to 6 years old, the number of kids/class is reduced (10/class) because the parents can register their kids in public schools (from 3 years old). From my perspective, it was perfect for my child who was three years old when he joined HADA, speaking only French and never been at school or childcare before!
In 6 months he was able to talk and understand Spanish. They were only 7 in the class, so the teacher could take good care of him!!!

Schedule : you can bring your child between 9h-9h30, if not staying for lunch, come back at 13h00 or then school from 15h00 until 16h30-17h00.
The little ones have a siesta from 13h00 to 15h00.

Holidays: very few days are closed! The main public day off, otherwise, the school is open from September until July.

Talking about prices?
All kids wear uniforms (100/year)
Food/Comedor : 87.-/month
Education: 167/month

Finally, they organize day trip/excursion each trimester.
They are very flexible with the hours and the last minute changes, of course you pay for that but when you have no nanny or family like most of us it is great help! (opening from 7h00 until 19h00)

In July, they organize activities/games, there is a small pool in the center.
For more info, see the web site.
http://www.hadaonline.com/

Colegio RIVAS-LUNA (from 6 to 15 years old)
A semi-private school. Which means the teachers are paid by the Generalitat Valenciana and the parents pay for the unifoms, books, material, food.et
All courses are in Spanish (Castellano) but the children learn English and Valenciano as languages in the program.
In order to apply there, you have to register via the Generalitat Valenciana education application form, the school gives you that in May and you have the answer in June. According to a point system you are admitted or on the waiting list!
In order to have the maximum of points you need for example : be resident in L'Eliana or be a familia numerosa = 3 kids or your child can be a sport elite!
Anyway, the best is to meet the director first and explain your expectations and the one of the school.
My child is doing his first year (6-7 years old) in that school. I am really impressed in good! The teacher is really dynamic. He is having other teachers for Sport, English and music. So very young the child is used to have different teachers.

Schedule: 9h-17h
Extra hours 8h-18h

Holidays: the school is following the Diari Oficial de la Comunitat Valenciana. In June and September , they have class only in the morning (9h-13h).

Talking about prices?
Uniform: 191/year (from summer to winter, and sport outfit!)
Books: 155/year (117 are paid by the Generalitat)
Education English+ material: 121/month
Food/comedor: 116/month

Other activities: The children are going on a day trip once /trimester.
Summer activities in July and sport after class (Judo, tennis, football) or Piano lessons.

For more information, see the web site of L'Eliana
http://www.leliana.es/cultura/centros/rivasluna.html

Here is the link to the web site of the school
http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/rivasluna/

Finally, Rivas-Luna is having a Childcare from 3 years old called Campanilla, but I do not have test it !

If you need more information, do not hesitate to contact me.

LOOKING OUT FOR SAFETY

FROM WWW.VALENCIALIFE.NET
Alfonso Grau, the Deputy Mayor of Valencia, has revealed that the Town Council intends to take steps against those who ride their bicycles, roller skates or skateboards on pedestrian only areas of the City. He added that this represents a considerable danger to pedestrians, and as a result the Council has passed an edict to the effect that anyone discovered using these in pedestrian areas could be fined up to five hundred Euros

APPROVED
The workers of the Valencian Municipal Transport services yesterday voted their approval of an agreement reached between the trades unions and the management, that will result in the new set of planned strikes being called off. Trade Union leader Juan Collado stated that the result of the voting was 59% in favour and 41% against, which means that salaries will now be increased by 1% annually above the consumer price index

Alcala Del Jucar

Here is a day trip to ALCALA DEL JUCAR we enjoyed last Sunday. It is 1h45’ drive from VALENCIA (140km) but worth the visit!

Alcala del Jucar is a “Troglodyte” village. First you will be impressed by the view then you discover the castle at the top, the river ”Jucar” at the bottom.

Inside the village, you walk through narrow streets and you can visit “Cueva del Masago”, It is a typical cave with a tunnel of 110m which give you access to the other side of the mountain, really impressive. You can have a coffee or lunch there.

Finally the visit of the Castle (well refurbished) is always fun with kids. On Sunday morning there is a market too at the bottom of the village.

Direction: Alcala del Jucar
Motorway A-3 to Madrid until Requena
Then follow N322 direction Albacete until Casa Ibanez.
Then follow the signs “Alcala del Jucar”.

Power Walk - Tuesday and Friday next week

Hi everyone

If you are bored, in need of some exercise, want to meet more people, or just need to get out of the house - then come to the Power Walks. Bring your babies and buggies too! Guys more than welcome!

We start off in the park opposite the 3 Towers near the coffee shop. We walk about 5 kms up the park, finishing where we started.

Now we walk the whole time with an option of running up the stairs near the end. Once we have finished the walk, we do some abs, press ups, leg exercises and stretches. All up it takes about 1 hour.

Afterwards most of us have a drink at the cafe by the rose garden.

See you at 3pm! This coming week we also have one on Friday. I was planning to organise Activity Challenges but I would rather put effort into that when we actually have more than 2 teams up and running.

Have a great weekend.

Rose garden starting to bloom

Make sure you get down to the Turia Park and check out the Rose Garden. It is in front of the Opera House. It smells so good!

My trip to NZ

When I was in New Zealand last month, I got to hang out with all of my family. These two ninos are my nephews, Coby at the top who is 2 1/2 and Pace is 4 1/2. We spent a few hours at a playground by the beach in Timaru and ate Cream Donuts!

Playgroups

Hi everyone with little ones

I started up a playgroup while a go, on Thursday's at 3pm, in the Turia Park with the little ones.

My situation has changed and I no longer go. I am not sure if anyone does actually go now.

If there are parents out there with children keen to get together with others, please let me know - especially those of you that have got something going and are keen for other children to join in.

It helps to have other children the same age to get together and play. Good for parents to exchange ideas also and to get out of the house!

Tennis Aerobics Clinic

Some of you may or may not know but we run a tennis aerobics clinic - tennis drills fast pace on a Friday morning in L'Eliana from 10 - 1130 am with coffee after.

The cost is 10 Euros a session or 6 sessions for 50 Euros.

This has been very successful and we are now beginning another session on Thursday mornings - same time - this will allow more people to come along - as we wish to keep the sessions open to everyone without them being overloaded.

It caters for all levels of tennis as you are not playing against anyone - you just get the opportunity to hit lots of balls yourself - and it is a good aerobic workout. We switch courts halfway through and then have a fun game for the last 15 mins all together.

It is held at the polydeportivo Hendaya - exit 15 (L'Eliana) off the CV 35.

Should you require more information please email me or just let me know if you would like to come along and give it a try,

Thanks

Upholstery repair and cleaning

We have a wonderful, old "Roche Bobois" four piece+ sectional, soft sofa. Has lasted for heaps of years and has no hard surface on it. Has been great for little ones and we still use it for massive teen sleepovers.
Now it is showing the ware and tear and I need to get the old fabric repaired/sewn. The material is outdated but I can use the umpteen numbers of pillows to produce some original fabric. There is a Roche Bobois store here and I have checked on line for the outdated fabric. I thing the best bet is to just get this repaired & cleaned until we are ready to recover the whole thing! Very good quality sectional couch and it is worth it to repair for now. Thanks for any store leads or input into fabric repair here in Valencia. Thanks for your help.

America's Cup Article worth reading

One thing that I have in place with the Valencia Cronica, is that is about living here and how to enjoy everything on offer etc. I have rarely had anything in it about the America's Cup itself. This was for a reason, as we live and breath it everyday with our partners involvement, so the cronica was a way to escape it for 10 minutes.

Well, probably for the first time, I am including a link to an article and I have just read and for everyone involved, it is worth the read. If you are in LIMBO like my family is, this could make it all a bit clearer for you. Mind you, we are all hanging on Ol Justice Cahn decision (which will probably be delayed...). This article came from the Spanish Newspaper, Levante, so it is what the Spanish have read.

You can read so much about what is happening with the current situation and wonder who to believe and how much is made up by the media. One minute you get your hopes up and the next day you are on the downer again.

Take from this what ever you want, as there will probably be something published tomorrow that will change all of this. Who knows!!! I know that I have given up!

GETTING LESS

The Valencian Community has registered almost a 50% drop in real estate deals in the first three months of this year, according to Vicente Carbonell, the head of the Valencian Community Property Register. Mr Carbonell also added that there were a multitude of projects that were on the books but had not yet been started - for two reasons; the financing of the building and the financing of a mortgage for any possible buyer. However, he added that he expected the current drop only to be temporary and not a sign of a general overall trend

News from Valencia Life

Strikes staged by engine drivers on the Valencian Metro yesterday affected 204 trains out of more than six hundred, and caused disruptions to some sixty thousand passengers. It was also revealed that the next strike will take place on Monday, and further chaos is expected to be caused today when the state railroad RENFE undertakes works on two of the suburban train services

Four days after Valmor Sport authorized the sale of tickets to the Formula 1 races in Valencia next August, yesterday Bancaja came though with an offer of its own: 7,500 entry tickets prices at 395 Euros each including a sleeping area in a specially set up site inside the Valencia Trade Fair Grounds - much along the lines of the Campus Party. Meanwhile Valmor Sport revealed that it only has tickets priced at 375 and 420 Euros left for the European Grand Prix and expects these to be sold out by this weekend

Organic Produce etc

I would really like to buy more organic produce - fresh fruit and vegetables etc - and also eco-friendly household cleaning stuff etc. Does anybody know of a supermarket/shop that specialises in these things? Preferably somewhere in the city, I am not too familar with the suburbs as yet!
Thanks
Hannah Ortega

ANSWER

From Bridget -
The best shop would have to be
J. Navarro Herbolario
Arzobispo Mayoral, 20 (behind the Ayuntamiento) Council Building in the old town.
Ph 963 522 851
Best to look at the map you so can find it easier. It is quite a big shop and you can get into it on a pedestrian street or the new entrance on San Vincent Matir - not far from Starbucks.

They have all the cleaning products, organic fruit and veg and lots lots more goodies. It isn't the cheapest but it has everything natural, organic that you could wish for.

The other place to buy nice fruit and veg is at the markets but you need to come across the ones that promote themselves at organic. I haven't been there for a while so out of touch who is where.

Please anyone else that knows of good shops, email them in by clicking on the readers comments below. Cheers, Bridget

Over a hundred exhibitors will be taking part in the 20th edition of the Mostra de vins, caves i licors i XVIII d'aliments tradicionals de la Comunitat Valenciana from April 2nd-6th.

Leading wineries and cooperatives from the Region of Valencia, their denomination of Origin Governing Councils, the traditional sausage makers from Requena, Segorbe and Cocentaina, as well as the la Asociación de Formatgers de la Comunitat Valenciana [Cheese producers of the Region of Valencia] will be at their stands between the Calatrava and Flores bridges from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

There will of course be other interesting products, including the "chufas" or tiger nuts from Valencia, traditional Alicante spirits, olive oil, Arrop i Tallaetes, ecological cheese from Catí and not forgetting orange juice.

Among the many interesting activities taking place during La Mostra we should highlight the "Workshop of the Senses" and the Beginner's Wine-Tasting Course organised by the the Federación de Sumilleres de la Comunitat Valenciana [Wine Waiters' Association], CERAI and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The fair will also host the Cata Els Bodeguers prize-giving ceremony at bottles of wine will be signed by enologists from the Region's leading wineries. Tastings of sausages and cold meats, an exhibition of rice from the Region of Valencia and Traditional Dances will bring this successful event to a perfect end.
